miyazaki-ing

have been watching a few miyazaki films over the past few months inc. howl's moving castle, porco rosso, totoro and my favourite for many years now spirited away.

i'm always so drawn into these worlds, with their japanese aesthetic and animism that is so foreign to here and yet makes much sense when you consider it in context.

educating the dreamers

watched two films this year which traipse along similar lines - the edukators and the dreamers. both, incredibly intense and inspiring (at least to me)...

the art of modern instituting (IMA)

while i was in Brisbane in early July - Lara, TK, Caitlin (from the TPS5 workshop) and I went along to the IMA to see what they had instore...

Shirin Neshat's Tooba - which i saw earlier in the year, at the Art Gallery of NSW. This piece, shot in Mexico, tells the tale of an older woman who gradually disappears into the trunk of a tree, while the villagers rush over the hills towards the place where this event is happening. The work is displayed on two screens at opposing ends of the darkened space.

and

et al.'s the second of the ordinary practices - an industrial work which ties together text from religious groups and cults etc, with forward/backward shifting dalek-like corrugated iron dunny-structures contained by 6-foot wire fencing.

vastly different works, and yet both incredibly powerful...

screening-full

the NGA has released the latest program for their 2006 Full Screen series: http://www.nga.gov.au/fullscreen/ with scott morrison (and daniel crooks) presenting work in late august 2006

random adventuring

while in brisbane for two weeks i managed to get to Liquid Architecture 7, Soobiesta, Klipp AV, a Limited Express (Has Gone?) gig at the Whitehouse and Lawrence English's 30th. Somehow these all turned out to be random adventures with Tom Hall - and i had a blast (who would've thought, eh?).

The story is probably better told here and here.
